Students struggle the most during their first year of varsity. Yes, the transition from high school to university can be quite challenging, as you may have seen with Sibongile in the latest episode of Sibongile & the Dlaminis. How do you tell if you are heading in the wrong direction? The red flags are always there.
Here's what should make you stop and think:
Partying up a storm when you should be studying
Although partying is considered a normal part of the varsity experience, going out all weekend will not earn you a qualification but hard work, dedication, and passion will. Learn to identify and prioritise important academic tasks over social events.
Changing yourself to please others
If you have to change around people you call your friends, there's a big problem. While there's nothing wrong with change, it's important to respect your boundaries. No one should force you to change or do things you are not willing to do. Learn to surround yourself with people who respect your boundaries.
Skipping class to be with a special someone
Finding love may not count towards your final grade at university, yet for many, it's an integral part of the experience. However, should you find yourself missing class to spend time with a significant other then there's a problem right there.
Skipping class may lead to lower academic achievements or even failure.
Waiting until the last minute to complete assignments
You know what they say about procrastination being the mother of all stuff ups? The routine of putting off assignments until the last minute rather than getting started right away can cause a scramble which can lead to stress and failure to get any work done.
Notice these red flags? Thankfully all is not lost. Noticing is the first step to improving.
